McAnany Construction Building on History
As one of the oldest cities in Kansas, Shawnee has
a lot of history. So it should be no surprise that Shawnee would
be the home to McAnany Construction, a 55-year-old business owned
by an Irish family with roots in the community that can be traced
back 150 years. The McAnany family is part of that Shawnee history
which had a large contingency of pioneers that came from Ireland,
Germany and Belgium in search of the American dream. In fact, Shawnee
has such a large Irish ancestry, that it’s home to one of the
biggest St. Patrick’s Day Parades in the Kansas City area,
in which the McAnanys are actively involved.
McAnany Construction is a commercial asphalt paving contractor that
works on paving, site development, athletic fields and golf course
construction and redesign. The company is currently run by the second
generation of McAnanys that consists of three brothers and one brother-in-law.
One project that the company is working on is the new $32 million
soccer facility for the City of Overland Park at 135th Street and
Switzer Road. That development requires nearly 1.2 million square
feet of synthetic turf to be installed on the fields, enough to cover
the average front yard of about 460 homes in Johnson County. This
is one of the largest installations of synthetic turf on a soccer
complex at one location in the country. It is scheduled for completion
this fall. McAnany is proud of these types of developments that provide
better recreation opportunities in Johnson County.
“My family has lived here all my life and we’ve always
been impressed with the improvements made to the Shawnee and the
Johnson County area over the years,” said Phil McAnany of McAnany
Construction. “The City of Shawnee has great leadership and
they’ve made great decisions for the community,” he said. “Shawnee
has some of the best assets to offer its residents from the best
schools to a phenomenal park and recreation department, and the overall
forward-thinking the city leaders have in developing this community.
It’s smart growth,” said McAnany.
Phil McAnany has been involved in the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce
and Economic Development Council for 10 years. He served as the Chairman
of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce in 2008. “The Shawnee Economic
Development Council and Chamber of Commerce have absolutely helped
us throughout our long career in Shawnee,” said McAnany. “We’re
a different company in that we don’t depend on networking for
business as much since most of our work is through a competitive
bidding process,” he said. “But we love being involved
with the ED and Chamber because it’s a way of giving back to
this great community that has already given us so much,” he
said.
