Perceptive Software Brings High Tech to the Midwest

Perceptive Software creates enterprise content management, imaging and workflow software for a broad range of worldwide industries to capture and organize virtually any document, then easily retrieve a precise page at the moment it is needed. The company has experienced enough success to expand international operations with a European headquarters near London, as well as offices in Australia and Singapore. Perceptive Software prides themselves as being on the peak of innovation in the growing industry of computer technology that is common on the east or west coasts.

Perceptive Software is not located in Silicon Valley, but instead, in Shawnee, Kansas, the heart of the Midwest and the Kansas City metropolitan area. Why did this company choose a suburban Johnson County address instead? Perceptive Software boasts a beautiful, unique headquarters with state-of-the-art architecture and ample employee parking built at a fraction of the cost on the coast. Their highly educated workforce, easily found in Johnson County, helped them get recognized for five years as one of the Kansas City Business Journal’s Best Places to Work. Shawnee has continued well-planned growth, a wonderful suburban lifestyle and easy transportation accessibility.

But sometimes, the grass seems greener on the other side, and a few years ago, the company considered moving to a more technology-based location. “It was a multi-layered approach in deciding to keep our Kansas-based company right here in Kansas,” said Cary DeCamp, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Perceptive Software. “We stayed in the metropolitan area because the access to the academic institutions here makes it easy for us to find great, educated talent,” said DeCamp, who has been with the company for 15 years. “We considered moving to a high-tech area but found that the easy way of life, low cost of living and suburban lifestyle with big city amenities was too good to leave behind,” he said.

“Shawnee has been a great location for us and I love that the city is big enough to have great services and amenities, but you still feel like you live in a real community,” said DeCamp. DeCamp has lived in Shawnee for over a decade. Some of the benefits that DeCamp sites of living and working in Shawnee are the fact that he can get to downtown Kansas City or the historic Kansas City Plaza quicker than those living further south.

DeCamp appreciates efforts made by the economic development groups in Kansas that helped the company make the decision to stay. “We are proud to have the Kansas City metropolitan area as our home,” said DeCamp. “The economic development teams – from the state to the local level – have been instrumental in keeping us here and helping our company grow and prosper,” he said.
What advice would DeCamp offer those considering a move to Shawnee? “Johnson County (Kansas) overall is a great location because of the tremendously educated workforce here,” he said. “We have no problems recruiting and filling our positions,” he said. “The advantages of living in Shawnee offer more room to expand upon at often lower prices than those you may find throughout the area.”

So if you are considering a move to the Kansas City metropolitan area, make sure to contact the Shawnee Economic Development Council for information that would help your business make a smart decision similar to what DeCamp’s did. Just ask DeCamp: Good business starts here in Shawnee.
