The Federal Opportunity Zone program is a unique development incentive enacted by the Federal Government in 2017. Federal OpZones offer investors enhanced incentives on capital gains based upon investing in the designated zones. The program encourages long-term development and promotes economic growth.

Shawnee is uniquely positioned with its Federal Opportunity Zone. Its Census Tract #20091052102 includes the popular Downtown Shawnee, that itself has a variety of prime sites available for development. It is one of only five Opportunity Zones in Johnson County, Kansas.

Shawnee's Federal OpZone

The Kansas Neighborhood Revitalization Act is a state-created program that allows for tax rebates for the rehabilitation of existing properties or certain types of new construction within a specified district.

Shawnee's KNRA offer's two areas that include it's downtown district (which also has a Federal OpZone) and lots located along Shawnee Mission Parkway, a major traffic corridor within Kansas City.

I-435 is a major highway that surrounds the Kansas City area and the intersection of I-435 and Shawnee Mission Parkway serves as the center reference point for the City of Shawnee.

In 2009, the Shawnee City Council formally accepted the City's I-435 Corridor Study that was published to serve the city's overall vision for development and economic growth.

The City's I-435 Corridor Study reviewed the issues, challenges and opportunities present
for future development within the Corridor surrounding the 4 mile stretch of I -435 running North/South through Shawnee.

In 2020, the City of Shawnee plans to begin a cosmetic and transportation infrastructure improvement project for much of 75th Street. Throughout 2019 the City engaged the community for recommendations that will provide guidance to enhance the experience for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit riders.

The beautification and improvement project is welcome progress in addition to the incoming Westbrooke Greene mixed-use dense development at 75th and Quivira Road.
